On September 14,2017 at County Hall, Cork, Charleville was awarded second place in Category B2 of this competition. We scored a total of 2930.4 marks, out of a possible total of 3000. We came second to Carrigtwohill, being 5 points behind them but 21 points ahead of Bandon which was in third place.
We have made huge strides in this competition in the past two years, thanks to the diligence of staff of Cork County Council who clean our streets, our local schools and our volunteers who did regular clean ups on each of the mornings for the duration of this competition in May and June 2017.
This competition aims to raise awareness of the litter problem which is an issue in every town and village in Ireland and we are grateful to Cork County Council for their efforts in this regard. Seeing volunteers picking litter on the street has raised awareness among the general public and the situation is improving.
The Fermoy MD Elected Members hosted a civic reception for the Tidy Towns groups who attained a medal, or won an award in the 2017 Supervalu Tidy Towns competition, the E-Centre, Charleville.
The groups honoured were: Coolagown (Gold Medal Award), Castletownroche (Bronze Medal Award, & Tom Ryan Highly Commended in Community Heroes Category) and Charleville (Endeavour Award).
